Mt. Zion Church History

The exact date that Mt. Zion Baptist Church was founded was unknown. Slaves and their masters had worshipped in the Old Mt. Zion Church on the hill from 1817 until the Civil War in 1865. After the war ended, the black Congregation left to form their own church in 1868, but they did not leave the Church name behind. The first church was on old wooden building that sat on the same location of the present day church. Mr. Gus Bly, who is the uncle of Mrs. Gladys Miller Johnson, provided the land for the church. Originally there were two churches, an African Methodist Episcopal Church and a Baptist Church on the second and fourth Sundays.
